Comprising the vast majority of the Old Mission Peninsula, straddled by East and West Grand Traverse Bay, Peninsula Township is one of the most desirable areas in Michigan. Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the world and tourists flock to see the Cherry blossoms in May. In addition, Peninsula is a designated American Viticulture Area and is home to 10 vineyards that produce internationally recognized wines. Wine tours have become an increasingly important part of the local economy.
Extending from just the southern end of the two bays north 17 miles to the historic Mission Point Lighthouse, the Peninsula is home to multimillion dollar beachfront estates, historic farms, established neighborhoods, such as Horizon Hills and Logan Hills, as well as newer developments. While much of the waterfront has been developed, there are still lots available to create new dream homes.
In addition to taking advantage of all that East and West Bay have to offer, residents and visitors enjoy hiking at the Pelizzari Natural Area and Old Mission Point Park and biking on the Peninsula, which has been designated a Pure Michigan Byway. There are also several fine dining options on the Peninsular, including The Boathouse and Jolly Pumpkin.
The Peninsula is located in the East Middle and Central High district and is served by the newly built Eastern Elementary School. In addition, the Old Mission Peninsula School was recently reopened as a charter school and serves families across Traverse City.
